Wingate Senior News Friday 4th of October 2019
Dear Parents / Guardians,
The school year has started well in the Seniors. Everyone seems to be settling in well and we welcome Mrs Jobling to the English Department, all new students and families to Wingate. We are delighted with the changes to the Sixth Form, particularly the focus of the students and their appearance.
The new hot lunches are proving popular. They are designed by a nutritionist and provide a balanced diet for young people. If you wish your child to have a meal at lunchtime, please contact the office. They are also proving popular with many staff!
Activities: Our super Prefects have started a number of lunch time activities for students. An Art Club started this week and they are busy deciding on their focus. A basketball competition is starting soon to be followed by sporting tournaments through the year. Computer Science and Dance clubs start soon as well as an Environmental Awareness campaign through the year. These - and more, are complementary to the new lunchtime and after school activities. More details of those on our website or from the school office.
Our recent, rather impromptu event raised a staggering €572. We did this event to raise some money for cancer support charities her and in the UK but also in support of our colleague who is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Thank you to all the students and parents.
Harvest Festival: Next fund raising event is the Harvest Festival. It's time to raid those cupboards of those lurking tins, packets of pasta and jars of 'stuff' you wonder why you bought them! All proceeds are divided between two food banks, one in the north and the Tenerife Family Church in the south. Please send in donations from Tuesday 8 October to support families less fortunate than ourselves.
Poppy Appeal: Our annual Poppy Appeal will begin when we return from half term on the 4th November. As an ex-serviceman myself who received support from the Royal British Legion when I was invalided from the Royal Navy, I know first hand the important work this organisation does to support men and women leaving the armed services. We will hold a short Remembrance Service on Monday 11 November at 10.50 where we remember all the injured and fallen from all countries during wars and conflicts around the World. Our school choir will be part of the celebrations at West Haven Bay on Sunday 10 November at 10.30. All parents welcome to both events.
