Wizard of a show from Wingate seniors

Following the Yellow Brick Road would have taken you to Wingate School last week for three sparkling performances of The Wizard of Oz.

It’s a long time since I reviewed a school production as a cub reporter and I’d nearly forgotten what great fun they are.

The talented youngsters put their all into this colourful show which took many many weeks to rehearse and prepare under the direction of Tony Garwood.

But it’s not just the cast who have to be applauded.  It’s obvious that a tremendous amount of hard work went on behind the scenes too, from making the excellent costumes to painting the scenery, doing the make-up, designing the programmes and much much more.

It was also lovely to see that the school play tradition is alive and well here on Tenerife.  Outside the temperature might be in the 20s but inside the school hall it felt like being home again surrounded by proud parents, friends and staff.

I loved all the main characters and applaud Diletta Ballarati for leading the cast as a really excellent Dorothy.  What a great American accent she perfected.

Scarecrow James Feather delivered some witty lines as well as some perfect falls (was he black and blue afterwards?) and Jordana Burridge put in a strong performance as the cowardly lion with a lovely singing voice.  Ayla Sykes was a great human Toto the dog and Ashley Hall was a very convincing Tin Man.  Full marks too to the witches Victoria Haslam and Fiona Henderson and to all the supporting cast who included Munchkins, citizens of Emerald City, the Witch’s Guards and the Snowflakes.

Special mention must also go to the little chap with the big voice and a multitude of tongue twisting lines, Marco Roberts as the Wizard of Oz who was word perfect.

This was a fast-moving fun production with live music from violin, percussion and piano and spot on sound effects and using the centre aisle as the Yellow Brick Road kept the audience very much involved.

Well done the seniors and the huge number of people involved.  You realise when you watch a production like this that there’s a great deal more to life on Tenerife than all the trappings of a sunshine holiday destination.                                             RS  Tenerife News 25th April 2008
