Wingate Sixth students plan for University entrance

Mr Stait-Gardner (Head of Wingate Sixth) is happy to answer queries and provide advice to parents and students about the suitability of the different courses available.

Wingate Launches 1st Business Studies Conference

Set to become an annual event, the first Business Studies Conference was held on Friday 27th February at the school.

The school hall was given over for the entire day to the students studying A Level Business Studies.  This is now made possible due to increasing numbers on this popular course, making the day a worthwhile learning opportunity with a difference.  Miss Kerbey, the Business Studies Tutor and organiser of the day said, “In the UK, and especially at designated Enterprise Schools, students studying this subject would be involved in this type of activity on a regular basis.  We want to give our students a taste of this kind
of experience so they can compete on equal terms,
especially for university entrance.”

Students from Wingate Sixth made presentations throughout the day based on their business ideas.  These included many enterprises such as; a new luxury Belgian chocolate shop franchise, a street pretzel stall, an Indian boutique, which would also sell Chai (a special Indian tea), an Internet café, a body building protein distribution and a democratic café in Stafford UK!  Students in their final year also gave presentations on Finance and Human Resource theory.  As far as possible the day was a professional event with students in business dress and with coffee and lunch served at the event.  The audience comprised fellow students and staff.  It is hoped that next year the conference will be open for visitors as well.

The aims of the day were a fast learning curve for the students, an improvement in the key skill of public presentation, the gaining of confidence and fun.  Whether or not the students go on to study business, the confidence they get from such events will stand them in good stead in any chosen career.

At the end of the day participants were presented with Delegate Certificates, which recorded their success.  The top presenter of the day, as judged by the audience, were: Miss Jessica Page for her NV Café for students and Miss Victoria Reeve for her idea of a luxury Galler Chocolate Shop franchise, both clearly demonstrating hard work and skill.

The next Business Studies Conference is on Thursday 25th February 2010.

Wingate Sixth students plan for University entrance

It's good-bye to those off to university and heads down for the new crop.  When Wingate Sixth opened its doors for registration at the beginning of September there were more students than ever waiting to enrol.  The number of students is now in the high 30s.  This is not large by UK standards but it is significant for a small British School in Spain.

Perhaps they knew about the success of former students in gaining university places.  Although Wingate Sixth has grown in size overall, class size is still comparatively small.  The largest classes this year are in Maths and Biology.  With 11 students each these are big enough to encourage discussion and small enough for individual attention.

Wingate Sixth offers a choice of 9 subjects at A level with Spanish at all levels.  Students who wish to improve their GCSE grades benefit from small classes in English, Maths and ICT.  The focus is on study and the time between taught lessons is spent in study periods.  However the attractive Common room is alive with activity during breaks and lunch.  Individual attention is paid to university applications.

Wingate Sixth tutors have particular expertise in applications to the UK and to Spanish University but can assist with wherever the student wishes to go next.

The Advanced Course

GCE AS and A levels

You need to have achieved at least a grade C in any subject you wish to study.

In order to be successful at A level you need to have five or more GCSEs at grade C or above as the starting point.

We offer the following subjects at GCE AS and A level:

Applied ICT, Biology, Business,  Chemistry,  English,  French,  ICT, Mathematics,  Psychology, Physics, Spanish and Travel & Tourism.

We offer the following subjects at AS only:              English Language.

Students usually study 4 subjects in Year 12 reducing to 3 in Year 13.

In addition, it is possible to study for GCSEs in some subjects.

We expect you to take Spanish if you do not already have a GCSE at Grade C or above.  Spanish is offered at all levels including beginners for those who have not studied the language before.  In two years it is possible to reach GCSE standard.

We use the Cambridge (CIE) and London (Edexcel) examination boards.

For the Advanced Course, university entrance is normally the target.

You may study Full-Time or Part-Time.  Full time students benefit from study and support facilities available.  Part-time students only attend for their lessons.

University Entrance

We provide assistance and advice with your university entrance applications.

For the UK, applications are made during the first term of Year 13.  You will need to research courses and prepare a personal statement.  You will be guided through the whole process by our experienced staff.
You will need to pass 3 subjects at GCE advanced level.  Different universities will ask for you to achieve particular
grades for them to admit you.

Spanish Universities accept A levels as entrance qualifications.  This means that Wingate Sixth students will be able to proceed to Spanish Universities as well as those in the UK.  The minimum requirements are two A level at grade E plus a good standard of Spanish.  However, the more popular the course the higher the grades you will actually need to get in.  We advise that you study 3 A levels.
Students wishing to proceed to Spanish university will need to make sure that they study the right combination of subjects.  We will advise you on the what combinations are acceptable for the course you wish to study at university.

The Standard Course

For those students who are not ready for A levels we offer a course that will allow you to consolidate your GCSEs.

You will only be successful in this course if you are prepared to work hard.

You will study English and Maths in small special classes and Spanish to GCSE level.  Spanish is offered at beginners level for those who have not studied the language before.  The remainder of the time will be spent studying alongside Year 11 students on GCSE courses.  Students will also participate in Sports with Years 10 and 11.

The Standard Course is normally taken full-time but individual GCSEs may also be studied.

Many students will proceed to employment after completion of the course.  However, it also provides a good basis for progression to A levels the following year.

We use the Cambridge (CIE) and London (Edexcel) examination boards.

Wingate Sixth Support, Accommodation and Facilities

Wingate Sixth students do not have to wear school uniform.  However,  we do expect you to exercise sensible choices and dress appropriately for study.  We do reserve the right to ban inappropriate clothing.

At Wingate Sixth students are divided into two tutor groups one for Year 12 and another for Year 13.  Your tutor will see you daily and monitor your attendance.  We aim to create an adult atmosphere within a firm and caring  environment.  Learning has to be at the centre of the reason for joining Wingate Sixth.

The Wingate Sixth is an integral part of Wingate Senior School.  Students are members of the school house system and attend an assembly each week.  They take part in the various charity fund raising activities.

The Sixth Form Centre is for study and relaxation.  It is equipped with  a kettle, a fridge, a microwave and personal lockers.

A lot of use is made of computers for our courses.  The Sixth Form has its own set of computers for its exclusive use.  All computers have internet access.

We monitor the progress of each student very closely.  Assessments are made at regular intervals and concerns discussed with student and parent.  During a two year course three School Reports are sent to parents; two in Year 12 and one in Year 13.  We also make use of an internal monthly monitoring system.  If there is a problem we will contact parents.

Wingate Sixth is open to any young person eager to study.   You do not have to have attended Wingate Senior School.

Please contact the school for a Wingate Sixth Prospectus and to arrange an interview.

We will be happy to discuss study possibilities with you.  Give us a call or email us.

A Guide to Life at Wingate Sixth

A helping hand

Your teachers are here to help and support you through your studies.  They are all highly qualified and skilled in their fields and will offer professional guidance and monitor your progress closely.

You will have regular discussions with your tutor about your progress, as well as support in your career planning.  Whatever your next destination is to be - employment, training, college or university - there will be support and advice available. Your teachers will give you help in your applications for employment or for colleges and universities if you aim to continue into Higher Education.

Wingate Sixth is a friendly and supportive environment: small enough for you to mix easily and get to know staff well, yet equipped to offer you a range of opportunities with quality teaching and facilities.

 Regular monitoring of progress

Assessments are made several times a term.  This is to ensure that you are coping with the work-load and making good progress.  Any problems will be raised swiftly with you and your parents.  There will be regular communication with parents to ensure that they are kept fully informed of your progress.

 A quiet place to study

The Wingate Sixth Centre has a large common room with individual lockers as well as drink-making and cooking facilities.  A designated Private Study Room in the main school is provided so you can get down to necessary research and revision.

The Centre also has its own computer suite for private study or research. Printer facilities and Internet access ensure students have a suitable place to work quietly. The Wi-Fi system means that students can log on to the Internet and the school intranet from their personal laptops.

 Extra-curricular activities

Wingate Sixth students are able to attend sports classes and join school clubs. A Wingate Sixth Committee meets monthly with the Head of Wingate Sixth.  Year 12 and Year 13 representatives are chosen by the students.  We also encourage students to get involved in useful activities such as mentoring or helping younger children.

A mature learning environment

Wingate Sixth students do not wear school uniform.  Nonetheless, appropriate dress and sensible behaviour will be expected at all times.  Remember, too, that you will become role models for younger children in the school.  Normal school rules apply and parents should know that there is a form tutor checking attendance as well as giving guidance and pastoral care.
