Wingate or Witchgate?

The Juniors celebrated Halloween in colourful style, with a truly imaginative and decorative display of costumes and make-up !  Children, and their parents, had obviously made a huge effort to excel previous years expectations and results !!   Most children in the Juniors successfully participated and when it came to judging the best outfits it proved very difficult to choose the winning recipients,  who were to receive various 'spooky' and 'scary' book prizes !!Congratulations to all those who took part and the Juniors managed to raise a substantial amount of charitable money, which will be donated to K9 at a later date.
Carol Hill
Head of Wingate Juniors.

It’s SATs time again

Pupils in Years 2 and 6 have achieved excellent results in their Wingate SATs.  Once again the figures for pupils in Year 6 were higher than those sitting the SATs at schools in the UK and better than the targets set by the UK Government.  All Year 2 pupils achieved at least Level 2 (the expected level) in reading, comprehension, writing, spelling and maths.  National figures are not published for Year 2 pupils in the UK as these test are no longer compulsory.

For pupils about to make the move to secondary education the results are very good news.  A sound achievement at the end of primary is a good basis for success at secondary level.

Mrs Carol Hill (Head of Wingate Juniors) pointed out that success came for a multitude of reasons.  Top of the list was excellent teaching across all four of the Junior years.  She commented that “The lessons are well planned and parents are involved wherever appropriate and helpful.  We have good resources and the children work hard to do their best”.

Miss Lynne Pearson (Head of Nursery and Infants) was equally complementary about her staff and the efforts of the Year 2 pupils.  She pointed out that at Wingate the whole life of the school helped pupils to do their best.  The many concerts and shows that the infant children took part in contributed positively to the results achieved.

The UK Government has set a target of 85% of pupils to achieve Level 4 in English and Maths at the end of Year 6 (Key Stage 2).  As you can see below, these targets have been more than met at Wingate

2008 Wingate Key Stage 2 SATS results

      English L4 97% (81% in England)           L5 45% (29% in England)

      Maths L4 90% (78% in England)             L5 38% (31% in England)

      Science L4 97% (88% in England)         L5 65% (44% in England)

Head of Department:   Mrs Carol Hill.

For many years Mrs Hill has been in charge of the Juniors and has, during her time at Wingate, seen the Department expand enormously and thrive both academically and socially.
She is also form teacher to Year 5.

Click here for more detailed information on the Junior Dept.

The Department consists of a one-form entry for Years 3-5 and a two-form entry for Year 6.  At present there are about 100 children in the Juniors.  Each class has a mixture of nationalities and abilities within it - the maximum number of pupils per class is 24.  The Department also has the use of three classroom assistants.

Key Stage 2 SATs exams  are taken at the end of Year 6.

Dramatic/musical productions are performed for Christmas each year, and usually take the form of a typically English pantomime.

Homework Policy:

The Junior Department believe firmly in the daily setting of regular homework, in order to supplement or reinforce work done in class.

Examinations
In line with the proposals of the National Curriculum there are no examinations in History and Geography for years 3, 4 and year 5.  Year 6 will have tests in English, Maths, Science Spanish, History and Geography.  The class teachers will set these tests in January, but in June, National Curriculum tests will be given in English and Maths for years 3 and 4; English, Maths and Science for year 5.   The official Standard Assessment Tests for year 6 will be taken in Maths, English and Science as shown on the school calendar.

The junior staff are encouraging children to drink water or fruit juices in school.  We would welcome parental support in this matter.  Bottled cold water is available in the drinks machine.

Tuckshop
Juniors are not allowed to go to the tuck shop at breaktimes and therefore need to bring a snack for break.  We would ask you not to send your child to school with a euro note of any amount.  Two euros is more than sufficient for a snack and water.

Junior Play
Help needed in the making of costumes.  Any hats with feathers will be given a good home.  The theme this year is Cavaliers and Roundheads.  Please see Mrs. Hill.

P.E. Kit and Uniform
Should be clearly labelled with your child’s name.  Full ankle socks should be worn by all juniors.  It would be helpful if parents regularly checked if their child has brought home his/her uniform and not someone else’s! Jumpers with names in went missing last year.  P.E. trainers must be white or dark blue and white and are the only footwear suitable for P.E.

Note - should your child be unable to participate in PE/Games for health reasons, please  send a note of explanation to the class teacher also please ensure your child has P.E. kit on day stated.  Your child may come in P.E. kit on Wednesday.

Jewellery
For safety reasons, girls will not be allowed to wear earrings in P.E.  We advise that earrings are taken out and left at home on Wednesdays.

Junior Activities
The following items are needed for Junior activities: i) old costume jewellery ii) plastic plant pots – any size (large or small).
