High Levels of Successes at Wingate

Click here for results for   Wingate Sixth   Year 11,   Year 10,   Year 9 KS2 KS1

Students at Wingate Sixth are celebrating along with A level students across the UK.  All students achieved the grades they needed for the next step in their careers.  For Zeno Frediani (Law), David Taggart (Biology) and Rachel Godley (English Literature and History of Art) this means entrance to Aberdeen University although all three are planning a gap year before they take up their studies.  Zac Waterman will be off to Manchester Metropolitan University to study Sports Management and Coaching.  Brandon Ord and Jeni Archer plan to go into employment (Brandon into the RAF and Jenny into tourism).  Tarik Stait-Gardner (Head of Wingate Sixth) puts their success down to determined hard work across two years.  He says “They were all very able and intelligent students to start with.  I could not congratulate them more warmly.  Zeno and Rachel deserve special commendation for their A grades in A level Psychology.”

Wingate Sixth is the Sixth Form of Wingate School in South Tenerife.  The Sixth Form has increased in size each year since its creation 4 years ago.  This is the second set of students to gain University entrance directly from the school.  Changes in Spanish law mean that from next year students will have the option to enter Spanish Universities using UK A levels instead of the Selectividad from Spanish schools.

It’s not just 18 year-olds who are doing well.  At Key Stage 1 (7 year-olds) all pupils achieved the expected standard of Level 2.  It’s the same story at the end of Key Stage 2.  In the top Juniors (11 year-olds), 100% of pupils achieved the expected standard (Level 4) in English, Maths and Science.  These are way above the UK government targets for these age groups and above levels being achieved by pupils in UK Junior and Infant schools.

For 14 year-olds the UK target is for 85% to get at least Level 5 in each of the subjects tested.  UK schools overall did not yet reach this target this year.  Wingate students beat them by a long way.  English 100%, Maths and Science 94%.  More able students are not neglected either with the proportion of students achieving the highest grade (Level 7), again beating schools in the UK.  (Level 7 figures Maths: Wingate 50%, UK 28%. Science: Wingate 25%, UK 15%.  English:  Wingate 19%, UK 10%).

Tony Garwood (Head of Wingate Seniors) was thrilled by the results.  He commented that students and teachers had all worked very hard. “We introduced a very hard line on all homework last year and we can see the fruits of that policy in these results.  Well done to everyone.”

Shouts of Joy from Wingate

Wingate echoed to the shouts of joy when the GCSE results arrived.  An anxious summer spent wondering came to a tense end as results were revealed.  There were lots of happy students and parents.

The School in south Tenerife saw results overall soar to 62% of the year with 5 or more A* to C grades.  This is up 20% on last year.

The top students were Poppy Mason, Yasmin Parker and Nicola Quinn each with 6 grades A*/A plus GCE AS Spanish.  Poppy’s strengths lie in the English and other language.  She now has GCSEs A*s in English, French, German and Spanish.  Yasmin’s best subjects were maths, physic, chemistry and biology (also A*s).  Both intend to continue their studies at Wingate Sixth aiming for university in the UK.  Nicola’s strengths lie with the languages too.  She is planning to transfer to the Spanish system in September.  Poppy commented that she was so relieved after 2 months of worry.  Yasmin was off to celebrate.

The highest achieving boy was Josh Knill with 8 higher grade passes including 2 A grades.  Too many students to mention by name did really well and the school is expecting most to stay at Wingate for their A levels.

There were some particularly good performances in some subjects.  French students all achieved a C or better, 6 of them at A or A*.  In First Language English, 6 students obtained A*s and another 5 got A grades.  Altogether 22% of the grades achieved were at A or A*.

All students achieved 5 or more passes at GCSE with 45% getting at least 1 A* and 97% at least one C grade or better.

There was also good news for Clement Chauvin in Year 9.  He achieved an A* in GCSE French.

Tony Garwood (Head of Senior) wanted to record his congratulations to the students for their hard work and to the teachers for theirs.  He commented “I am very proud of the results achieved.  In truth, these results do not come as a surprise to us since we monitor students’ progress very closely.  And of course we are completely unreasonable when it comes to homework.  It all has to be done, you can see the results.”
